Types of Open Bites

What Causes an Open Bite?

There are different types of causes of an open bite, including:

• Behavioral risk factors: Extended use of a pacifier, thumb sucking, and tongue thrusting (pushing the tongue forward against the front teeth when swallowing).

• Developmental factors and genetics: Some children may experience an open bite when they have both baby teeth and permanent teeth at the same time; however, this is usually resolved once all of their permanent teeth come in. As for genetic factors, this occurs when there is an abnormal growth of the jaw or the skeleton or if teeth don’t fully erupt out of the gums.

• Injuries: An injury can result in a jaw’s misalignment and cause different types of malocclusion, including an open bite.
