An open bite is a type of malocclusion (misalignment) that occurs when the upper and lower teeth slant outwards and do not touch when the mouth is closed. This type of condition can develop in the front (anterior) of the mouth or the back (posterior) of the mouth. Open bites occur due to dental or skeletal factors.

If you have an open bite, it is important to seek treatment, as this condition can cause many problems for your oral health. Types of Open Bites

There are two categories of open bites, which are anterior open bites and posterior open bites:

Anterior open bite: An anterior open bite occurs when your upper and lower teeth have a gap between them, even when your mouth is closed. It can affect all of the front teeth or just a few teeth. Treatment is often necessary because patients are not able to or have trouble tearing food with their front teeth. Additionally, speaking may be difficult with an anterior open bite.

Posterior open bite: A posterior open bite is the opposite and occurs when the back teeth do not touch when biting down. Treatment is often necessary when a patient has a posterior open bite because they are unable to chew properly.

Dental vs. Skeletal Open Bites

Overbites can also be categorized as dental or skeletal in nature. For example, a dental open bite occurs from a tooth eruption issue. A skeletal open bite occurs due to abnormal facial growth, which is caused by genetics.

What Causes an Open Bite?

There are different types of causes of an open bite, including:

  • Behavioral risk factors: Extended use of a pacifier, thumb sucking, and tongue thrusting (pushing the tongue forward against the front teeth when swallowing).
  • Developmental factors and genetics: Some children may experience an open bite when they have both baby teeth and permanent teeth at the same time; however, this is usually resolved once all of their permanent teeth come in. As for genetic factors, this occurs when there is an abnormal growth of the jaw or the skeleton or if teeth don’t fully erupt out of the gums.
  • Injuries: An injury can result in a jaw’s misalignment and cause different types of malocclusion, including an open bite.
